Painting the plant stand was pretty simple. First I patched up some of the screw hole with wood filler, then sanded everything down. Since the redwood I bought from Home Depot was very wet I waited a few weeks to let the wood dry out before painting it. I used the same outdoor paint that I used on the patio furniture so everything will match.
